ZitatTaiwan Can’t Rely on ‘Daddy America’ to Solve Its Problems
Natürlich keine offizielle Position, aber gefühlt eine Frechheit.
Allerdings muss man einschränken, der Autor hat eine halbe Innensicht:

ZitatI was born in Hong Kong but I grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, a small two-island nation in the Caribbean [...]
ZitatI'm a Taiwan-based writer who has been living in East Asia for over a decade. During this time, I have worked in Taipei, Beijing and Hong Kong as an editor at English-language newspapers [...]

https://theintercept.com/2020/01/07/joe-biden-student-loans/
ZitatEarly in his senatorial career, Biden played a role in making it easier for students and parents to take out burdensome loans, spanning across several decades. Later, his landmark bankruptcy reform legislation made it nearly impossible to discharge student loans, birthing a predatory industry and sinking millions into unsustainable levels of debt.
[...]
Years later, as a senator from Delaware, Biden was one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the disastrous 2005 bankruptcy bill that made it nearly impossible for borrowers to reduce their student loan debt. The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act raised the bar for families to pursue Chapter 7 bankruptcy protections. It overwhelmingly passed in the Senate at the end of the Clinton administration, over the objections of Warren, then a bankruptcy expert who had tangled for years with Biden over the issue. She lobbied first lady Hillary Clinton, who herself persuaded Bill Clinton to veto it.
Biden came back to the legislation under the Bush administration; it passed the Senate in 2005 on a 74-25 vote, with most Democratic lawmakers, including then-Sen. Barack Obama, voting against it. (Clinton, by then a senator from New York, voted for it.) George W. Bush signed it into law, and private student loan debt skyrocketed in the wake of its passage. The total amount of private student loan debt more than doubled between 2005 and 2011, growing from $55.9 billion to $140.2 billion, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Zitat von Opa SeppBIDEN: Is it fair to people who, in fact, do not own multi-billion-dollar businesses if they see one of these guys getting all the tax breaks? Is that fair? What do you think?
hmm......but is it, Joe?
Problem:
[...] President Joe Biden conceded on Thursday evening that a key part of his predecessor's signature tax law is probably here to stay due to opposition from a centrist holdout.
During a CNN town hall, the president offered a candid assessment of the political haggling underway on his $3.5 trillion social spending plan. Swaths of the legislation are on the chopping block due to demands from Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona to restrain the price tag and its reach.
Biden said that Sinema had specifically told him she was opposed to raising the corporate tax rate above 21%, the level President Donald Trump locked in with the 2017 tax cuts.
"She says she will not raise a single penny in taxes on the corporate side and/or on wealthy people, period," Biden said. "And so that's where it sort of breaks down."
He also acknowledged that 12 weeks of paid leave in the package had been whittled down to four weeks, and tuition-free community college was likely out of the social spending plan because of Manchin and Sinema's resistance. Biden also said he opposed a work requirement on the child tax credit, a key Manchin demand. The president also said the inclusion of expanded Medicare benefits was "a reach."
Sinema's opposition to undoing swaths of the Trump tax law deals a major blow to Democratic efforts to fund their safety net expansion with taxes on the richest Americans and large firms. Biden had campaigned on rolling it back, calling it a giveaway to the wealthy and a burden on the national debt. Much of it could endure through the first Democratic trifecta in a decade.[...]
Solution:
Make Joe Manchin great again with the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022
[...] Last week, Joe Manchin, the West Virginia senator whose decisive vote in the evenly split upper house has led some to brand him ‘President Manchin’, and Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer surprised even the most clued-in political junkies by announcing support for a climate bill that had been declared dead just several weeks before.
The 725-page legislation seemed a brief respite from a summer of extreme weather – a brutal heatwave and flooding across the US – as well as soaring inflation, a cost of living crisis and radical Supreme Court rulings that overturned abortion rights and limited the regulatory power of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Manchin, the top recipient in the US Congress of fossil fuel cash, had previously killed President Joe Biden’s more ambitious climate package. But there are signs that this time may be different.
For one, this is now Manchin’s package. He even named it the Inflation Reduction Act (extraordinarily abbreviated to IRA).[...]
Democrats and climate experts claim the package will cut carbon emissions by 40% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. Overall, the proposed legislation will make it more affordable for people to access clean technology.
But the full picture isn’t quite so rosy, or, in this case green.
Unlike last year’s Build Back Better package, the IRA actually incentivizes fossil fuel production. The bill that Manchin killed had a clean electricity program which would penalize utilities that didn’t transition to renewable energy. The IRA bill’s ‘all of the above’ energy strategy invests in developments that will mean further greenhouse gas emissions. New solar and wind projects are contingent on approval for oil and gas leases on millions of acres of public land and waters. And there is a provision that locks in new drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of Alaska. (Many climate groups are now mobilizing against these elements.) [...]
