China [Sammelthread]

    Is Taiwan a State?

    [...]

Is Taiwan a state? A (rather oversimplified) starting point: does it satisfy the four criteria laid out in the Montevideo Convention of 1933? The necessary conditions for statehood were delineated in the Montevideo Convention of 1933, which provided that a state must possess a permanent population, a defined territory, a government, and the capacity to conduct international relations. Taiwan, as a matter of course, satisfies all the Montevideo criteria.

While Taiwan satisfies the four criteria set out in the Montevideo Convention, scholars remain divided on the issue of Taiwan’s statehood. As it stands, The Creation of States in International Law by the late judge of the International Court of Justice, James Crawford, is the most influential scholarly work that negates Taiwan’s statehood on the following grounds: “Taiwan is not a State because it still has not unequivocally asserted its separation from China and is not recognized as [a] State distinct from China.” However, this observation begs the question of whether an “entity,” notwithstanding the fulfillment of the Montevideo criteria, is obliged to unequivocally assert its identity as separate from another to qualify as a state.

Consistent with the stable pattern of indigenization of the government and, more importantly, the Taiwanization of the Republic of China through democratic self-governance, or a form of quiet revolution, Tsai, while acknowledging the fact that the Republic of China was established in 1911, endorses the placement of greater weight on its resettling in Taiwan after 1949 and—in our view—moves a step further by equating Taiwan and the new Republic of China after 1991. Tsai’s “Taiwanization equation” again confirms that Taiwan sees herself as a sovereign state created from the 1991 constitutional amendment in the aftermath of the civil war

Mr Xi’s calls for “common prosperity” also worry foreign investors. His goal of broadening wealth and narrowing inequality has some economic, as well as social, justification. Increasing the share of national income paid to workers could help rebalance China's economy away from investment towards consumption. Indeed, increasing labour’s slice of the cake is one of the indicators tracked by the imf on its "rebalancing scorecard" for China. But investors fear new taxes on wealth or capital gains. And "common prosperity" has become associated with a clumsy crackdown on some of China’s most successful tech firms.

    https://www.reuters.com/techno…port-controls-2022-11-08/

    Zitat

OAKLAND, Calif., Nov 7 (Reuters) - U.S. chip maker Nvidia Corp (NVDA.O) is offering a new advanced chip in China that meets recent export control rules aimed at keeping cutting-edge technology out of China's hands, the company confirmed on Monday.

Nvidia responded to Reuters' reporting that Chinese computer sellers are advertising products with the new chip.

The chip, called the A800, represents the first reported effort by a U.S. semiconductor company to create advanced processors for China that follow new U.S. trade rules. Nvidia has said the export limitations could cost it hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.

Xi Jinping's plan to cope with China's ageing population: A university

Xi Jinping: China's president Xi Jinping demanded that Beijing “implement a national strategy to actively cope with ageing”.

China has decided to set up a national university for the elderly to cope up with the rapidly ageing society and declining fertility. The university will function under the state-run Open University of China and the curriculum will range from foreign languages, computer skills, music and dance to photography, painting, sports, cooking and other crafts and skills, the Global Times reported.

    Zitat

"The election results were not as expected... I should shoulder all the responsibility and I resign as DPP chairwoman immediately," Ms Tsai, who will continue as president of the self-ruled island, told reporters.

The elections for local councils and city mayors theoretically have a domestic focus, covering issues such as crime, housing and social welfare, and those elected will not have a direct say on Taiwan's policy regarding China.

However, Ms Tsai and government officials urged voters to use the elections to send a message about standing up for democracy, as Beijing increases pressure on the island.
